When to Replace Brakes

The average time to replace brakes is anywhere between 20,000 and 70,000 miles. However, this range will vary depending on the type of vehicle you drive, driving conditions, and your driving habits.

How to Know When Your INFINITI Brakes Need to be Replaced

There are key indicators that Providence drivers should keep an eye out for when determining whether or not they need new brakes like hearing a squeaking noise when pressing on them or noticing thinning brake pads. Here’s a breakdown of the major signifiers that a brake replacement is needed:

• Squealing or Squeaking Noises: As a built-in indicator of wear, there are metal tabs located near the top of the brake pad, and these tabs will start making a squeaking noise when they scrape against the brake rotors. This means that the brake pads have thinned and need to be replaced ASAP.
• Grinding Noise: If hear a profound grinding sound when you hit on the brakes, it could either be something small like a rock caught in the brake caliper unit (this can be easily removed), or it could be metal scraping against metal. This occurs when the brake pads are completely worn through and they’re causing grooved in the brake rotor.
• Burning Smell: When you’re driving throughout Coventry, if you ever smell a sharp chemical odor, the brakes or clutch might be overheating.
• Vibrations When Braking: Brake pedals vibrating means that the pad adhesive may be getting hot and spreading across the rotor. This occurs when the brake pad wears down and isn’t distributed evenly, resulting in the pedal vibrating.
• Car Pulls to the Side When Braking: Since brake pads don’t always wear out at the same rate, the vehicle may pull slightly to the right or left.
• Brake Pedals Feels Soft: Does your brake pedal ever feel soft or squishy when you press on it? Or does it sink all the way to the floor? This can either be the result of air moisture in the braking system or an issue with the master cylinder. Keep this in mind: your brake pedal should stop 1 to 1.5 inches from the floor. If it goes any lower, you run the risk of not being able to sop your INFINITI in time.
• Leaking Fluid: If your brake pedal feels soft, have one of our service center technicians check for a master cylinder leak or a leak somewhere else in the braking system.
• Indicator Light Illuminates on the Dashboard: Some vehicles have warning lights that will flash when you need to replace the brake pads. Or, you might notice a light on the dashboard indicating that your automobile is due for an inspection.

How Long Do Brakes Last?

Brake pads typically last anywhere from 25,000 to 60,000 miles. Again, this number will differ depending on whether you have a heavy foot and apply a lot of pressure when braking, when you do most of your driving, and the type of materials that your brake pads are made out of.

What Does Brake Fluid Do?

Brake fluid allows the different components within the brake system to move, and without enough brake fluid, you won’t be able to stop the vehicle when pressing on the brake pedal. In short, you need the right amount of brake fluid to safely stop at red lights and stop signs! You can find INFINITI brake fluid near Providence right here at INFINITI of Warwick.
